Thymic regeneration pilot reports partial immune restoration
The thymus is the organ that trains new immune cells, and it shrinks as we age. A very small study tried to regrow it and saw more fresh immune cells afterwards. With this few participants and no control group, the result is a hint, not a finding.
What happened
Nine participants aged 55-70 completed a 12-month hormone-based protocol.
Imaging suggested increased thymic density, and naive T-cell counts rose in seven participants.
Epigenetic age estimates decreased modestly in the same participants.
Why it matters
Immune aging underlies infection risk, cancer surveillance and vaccine response, so restoring it would have broad effects.
Immune measures are objective and cheap, making this one of the few areas where small trials can still be informative.
The protocol uses existing approved agents, which lowers the barrier to larger replication.
